Do you have a secret child safety code word ?

It is vital that parents have a safety code word for their children. Giving your children a safety code word empowers and can help keep them safe.

There are circumstances where it isn't possible for a parent to give the code word to someone. But a car accident, sudden illness or if they feel they are in danger or if your child is being picked up by a neighbor, relative, friend or, in extreme cases, the police or local social services.

It is essential that parents do not pick a safe word that is difficult for children to remember. Choosing words like “cotton candy,” “banana split,” or “pineapple,” are easy words for children to remember. It is essential the parents choose wisely.

In addition to safe code word parents must be sure to discuss with your children that predators are great at manipulating children and may try to pry the safe word from them in conversation or with guessing games. Code words can save a child's life. They can make the child feel secure in what could be a traumatic time, but they aren't foolproof. Just picking a word isn't going to make the child remember to ask for it or respond to it. When testing the child, it is essential that understand they should never give the code word the other person must give it them the code word. Parents it’s ok to change the word now and then but too often will leave the child confused.

Parents to be proactive and teach these four rules of safety:

1. Make sure kids check with parents or caregivers first before they do anything.

2. Take a friend whenever possible.

3. Tell an adult 'no' if they make you feel scared or confused.

4. Go to a trusted adult afterward.
